History of the Wine Fair

First occurring in Saint Savinien during high season in 1976, the fair was originally known as the “Pineau (a special blend of wine and cognac specific to the Poitou-Charente) and Galette (flat cake) Fair” and was held by shopkeepers and home growers. Over the years, it has evolved into the winegrowers domain and thus the name of “Foire aux Vins” was adopted.
As the event has grown, so the management has become more complex, demanding constant attention and more financial backing. In March 2000, an Association was created specifically for the annual organisation of the fair under the designation of “life and soils in the Savinois Country”, now known as “The Wine Fair”
The new organisation first set about finding sponsors (Town Councils, Banks, Chambers of Commerce & Industry, Insurance companies etc), and then, ensuring that information was widely available, even more commercial wine growers and traders joined in. Following a large publicity campaign from the beginning (press, radio, posters, leaflets, personalised and targeted invitations), and having found a well-informed clientele of connoisseurs and buyers who come to find authentic and quality produce, the promoters have been forced to limit exhibitors to one per vineyard.
Neither has the education angle been neglected - a wine waiter, a distiller and a barrel maker demonstrate their skills for the visiting public.
As for edible produce, there is a large range of regional and international produce representing the provinces and countryside in true French style.
